Per the National Trust website: "medieval bishop's fish pond in tranquil wildlife haven amidst precious heathland". Yep, it's a pond. I'm not sure you'd find a pond in the US given equivalent status. But not a bad place to take the dog for a walk, as the numerous other dog walkers we encountered would attest to. However, seriously messed up the planned walk by heading anti-clockwise around the pond rather than what should have been clockwise. No wonder the directions didn't make sense! As a result, ended up just circling the pond and definitely missed out on some better ridge line views. Next time...
