Hope you had a good Dr Martin Luther King Jr Day. Or, as you might call it in the UK, Monday. This bank holiday feels out of place in the current climate. The current administration is perhaps the very anti-thesis of what Martin Luther King stood for. Diversity, equity and inclusion. All shamefully cracked down upon now. Frankly, I'm surprised this is still a federal holiday. I was not surprised to find out that MLK Day was first observed in 1986, but that certain states fought it as a national holiday and it wasn't until 2020 that finally all states observed it. Just a small reminder that America has never been good at dealing with social issues long before Trump.
