Today felt like the end of this chapter of my life, and the start of a new and uncertain one. Maybe the most significant event since I returned to Seattle. It was my last day in the office. As I was clearing out my desk, it felt very weird. I've still got a job, but it very much felt like it was my last day. I took home as much as I could, within reason - including a bunch of stuff that I'll probably never look at (like various books/manuals/notes I've accumulated over the years) or never use (when was the last time I ever needed a stapler?!). I managed to get home the important stuff, like my office chair and the IT guy hooked me up with a huge computer monitor (almost as big as a TV!). Now I've got to sort out my home office setup, but it should definitely be a lot better than what it was. And I took home quite a few canvas prints from around the office - it looked like some of the better ones had already been taken, but I'm happy with what I've got (I'll include photos of them in a future post). I don't know what I'll do with these - I've not exactly got a good track record with hanging up pictures and stuff. And I'm actually thinking I'd prefer to create canvas prints of my own photos, rather than someone else's. Regardless, converting from an office-based worker to a remote worker is going to take some getting used to. Based on my experiences during COVID lockdown, my biggest concern about becoming remote is that feeling of loneliness - I'll miss the human interactions that come with working in an office.
Be careful about your mental health lad.
ReplyDeleteI recommend doing something - even if only for a few hours a week - which involves interaction.
It's proper hard when you're on your own, & here in the UK pub culture (just wandering down to a local pub to see others interacting is enough) helps.
I don't know the US, but a start might be following a local sports team as a regular. I've been to both Palace & Basingstoke Town games on my tod before - not as good as going with company granted, but prevents becoming "off grid"
